1. Coil at Supersonic 2003
John Balance and Sleazy’s inimitable Coil closed the first edition of the festival in style back in 2003, with a characteristically unpredictable show, set against the unique backdrop of the Custard Factory’s central pool.

2. Supersonic 2005
Overview By 2005, the festival had grown exponentially, boasting a stellar line-up that featured Psychic TV, Battles, Dalek and the rather splendid Modified Toy Orchestra.

3. Zombi, Live 2006
2006 saw heavyweights like Isis and Michael Gira join the fold, and also this electrifying set from synth laden sci-fi krautrock madmen Zombi!

4. Broadcast, Live 2006
Birmingham’s dream-pop heroes played a triumphant homecoming set this year too.

5. High On Fire, Live 2006
Matt Pike’s molten metal marauders High On Fire laid waste to the main stage in 2006 as well.

6. Circle, Live 2006
Finland’s musical mavericks Circle enraptured the audience with a set of hard rockin’ cosmic jams, so much so that they were asked to perform again in 2011. But more on that later…

7. Modified Toy Orchestra
Live 2006Brian Duffy’s marvellous Modified Toy Orchestra delighted the crowd with a variety of manipulated play things and bizarre, unintended sounds.

8. Supersonic 2006 Friday Night Montage
Here’s a montage of 2006’s opening day, a wild experience that will make every other Friday night pale in comparison!

9. Supersonic – BBC Feature 2007
In its 5th year, Supersonic was much making such big waves that the BBC filmed this short feature about the festival.

10. Oxbow Interview 2007
San Franciso’s finest avant-rock export Oxbow have graced the Supersonic stage numerous times over the years. Never afraid to experiment with new sounds and try out different ideas, they have appeared acoustically, and this year they’ll perform with an accompanying orchestra! It’s precisely this enthusiasm for the unknown that makes Oxbow the perfect Supersonic band.

11. Duracell Interview 2007
Drum kit maverick Duracell blessed us with a high octane showing in 2007 too – here he is talking us through his music making process!

12. Qui – Live 2007
The Jesus Lizard frontman David Yow also performed this year in suitably unhinged style, with his band Qui.

13- Merzbow & Keiji Haino, 2008
2008 saw the meeting of these two masters of Noise, a combination that had feedback enthusiasts and aural masochists foaming at the mouth. Supersonic has a long history of inspiring collaborations and special performances, and this is a shining example!

14- Supersonic 2009 Overview
With Venetian Snares, Corrupted, Nissenmondai, Monotonix, Thorr’s Hammer, Goblin and countless others all in tow, Supersonic 2009 was a big year for the festival, which has only gone from strength to strength since. Here’s a quick recap for those of you who missed it!

15- Iron Lung, Live 2009
Seattle’s powerviolence prodigies Iron Lung will be familiar to anyone who witnessed their devastating show at Supersonic ’09, when drummer Jensen Ward alternated between crushing the crowd’s skulls with his furious battery and splitting their sides with his hilarious stage banter.

16 - Nissenemondai - 2009

This Japanese Trio were one of the highlights of the festival with their driving rhythm section and metallic guitar sound something like an ungodly and hypnotic amalgamation of Boredoms, Neu!, Can, and Ruins circa 1986-7.

Combining the abstractions of Sonic Youth with the out-there explorations of the best free jazz

For one weekend each year Digbeth’s arches vibrate with strange, wonderful sounds as the Custard Factory becomes the focal point for one of the UK’s most distinctive and respected music festivals…Supersonic Festival. 2012 marks the ten year anniversary of this dynamic, constantly challenging, experimental, multi-disciplinary arts festival, which identifies the otherwise indescribable connections between contemporary music, art, performance and film. To commemorate this impressive and very special milestone this year, Capsule propose to work with Supersonic alumni and emerging artists to celebrate the achievements of the festival thus far whilst also focusing firmly on the contemporary. Because as well as giving a warm welcome to many influential, era-defining artists over the years, Supersonic always has an uncanny knack for highlighting new acts before everyone else is talking about them.
As ever, Capsule’s programme has a sense of spectacle at the very heart of it, always aiming to capture the imagination of the audience, and with a friendly, bustling atmosphere to boot, there is little wonder why the festival draws fans, performers and industry folks from across the globe.
