The Protomen, "Breaking Out"
The Protomen are the greatest band in America today. Witness their uncaged passion, enthusiasm, and musicianship in this song, “Breaking Out,” one of the best of the new century. Very soon, they’ll be releasing a... listen now... LIVE ALBUM of... seriously... QUEEN COVERS. I have heard it and it is flawless. They have not one, not two, but THREE singers who trade off leads and each one does Freddie Mercury justice. THEY HAVE THREE SINGERS WHO CAN DO FREDDIE MERCURY JUSTICE! Everyone needs to know this band.Queen, "Under Pressure"
On second thought, no one does Freddie Mercury justice. HOLY FUCK!!! FREDDIE!!! FUCK YOU!!!The Postmarks, "Balloons"
I have two-year-old, and this is one of his favorite videos ever. “I need Balloons Video! I need Balloons video! I need Balloons Video! I need Balloons Video! I need Balloons Video! I need Balloons Video!” “Okay, son, we’ll watch this otherwise drearious indie band force smiles as they make a throwaway Yo Gabba Gabba song into something actually pretty joyful and beautiful.” “More Balloons video! I need more Balloons video!” Carol Lynn Townes, "Believe in the Beat"
Another one of my son’s favorites, and now one of mine. I’d imagine being a part of a movie “concert” scene like this is a unique, live-ish music experience. It looks like everyone had a genuine blast, and everyone is truly exhausted. Check out a wiped-out Ice-T in the background of the shot where the old guy who runs Miracles blows a big kiss to the camera.Al Jarreau, "Mornin'"
Al Jarreau is the badboy of scatting, which means he’s probably a very nice man. Goody-Goody or rebel, it doesn’t matter. Al Jarreau is a maniac in the best way, and nothing demonstrates that more than the bridge of this song.Journey- Intro to Raised on Radio
If you can get your hands on the rare Journey video about their Raised on Radio tour, devoted mostly to the road crew and narrated by an NFL Films voice, then you need to get your hands and eyes on it ASAP. This is a taste. Any of you who are fans of my Yacht Rock series will notice I stole a Steve Perry soundbite from this in episode 3. I love this documentary so much. And yes, that’s American Idol’s Randy Jackson.Rock-a-Fire Explosion, Oldies Medley
I’d give my left nut to go back in time for an evening at Showbiz Pizza, to see if it was really as awesome as I remember it.Chris Bathgate, "Serpentine"
I don’t know who this guy is. He sings a pretty song, though. The venue is what I want to show you. This is Ann Arbor, Michigan’s Halfway Inn, affectionately referred to as The Halfass. It was a cafe in the basement of a dorm that hosted live music on the weekends. My dorm room was directly above it. It was the coolest thing in the world to have a job at The Halfass. So, I got one and met some of the best people I’ve ever known and had some of the best times. I loved that wall of album covers. I think the Halfass is just a study lounge now.Elton John, "Bennie and the Jets"
I love when people play hard-to-dance-to songs on Soul Train
