Zeena Schreck is the daughter of Anton LaVey and was the High Priestess and spokesperson of the Church of Satan from 1985–1990. In 1990, Zeena Schreck publicly renounced and exposed the fraudulent personality cult she was born into known as the Church of Satan, severing all connection to its founder, Anton LaVey and discontinued use of her born surname "LaVey". She is also the former High Priestess of the Temple of Set and the co-director of the Werewolf Order and Radio Werewolf, which she led from 1988-1993 with her husband, musician and author Nikolas Schreck.

Today, Zeena is an artist/musician/writer, practicing Tibetan Buddhist yogini, and the Hemet-neter tepi Seth, founder and leader of the Sethian Liberation Movement (SLM) since 2002.

In the film, West's character is a wayward Frisco woman who gets herself into trouble but assumes the identity of a dead missionary, committing herself to following through with the virtuous deeds of her newly assumed identity, transforming sinners by using her street-smarts and wit (a tantric crazy wisdom message, delivered the way only Mae West could.).

As a neophyte Vamp, West was a great inspiration to me. For my 16th birthday, I had the privilege of meeting her (what a rite of passage!). She gave me her stamp of approval. A rarity, I was told. For she was not fond of many women.

This song best conveys the mood in my life circa 1990, at the finale of my media notoriety as High Priestess of the Church of Satan, during the Christian fundamentalist witch hunt in the U.S. before resigning from that position and leaving the U.S.. It should be noted that this reflects the year this Daniel Johnston song came out, long before he'd become the Hipsters' darling he's known as today.

I chose this fantastic, bombastic rendition of “O Fortuna” not only because it's good, but because it's performed in part by one of my many former workplaces, U.C. Davis! I also chose this particular video because it coincidentally combines two of Carl Orff's compositions which I encorporated into personal rites in the months after leaving the U.S. while living in Vienna.

10. Egyptian born, American electronic music innovator Halim El-Dabh performs “The Expression of Zaar” a.k.a., "Wire Recorder Piece" (1944).
The earliest use of tape sampling as experimental electronic music, this piece consists of recorded sounds of an ancient zaar ceremony (a ritual of possession, usually by a woman or effeminate man, practiced in Ethiopia, Northern Sudan and Southern Iran). This ceremony was recorded using very early wire recording devices then manipulated, processed and re-recorded for the desired tonal quality. The completed piece was presented in 1944 at an art gallery event in Cairo.

At the time of this interview Jerry Johnston advertised himself as an "objective journalist". Only days prior to this interview, Zeena researched Johnston by personally attending one of Johnston's evangelical sermons in which he was promoting his imminent meeting with Zeena for this very interview, whipping the crowd into a frenzy by warning them of what he deemed Zeena's "dangerous influence" on society. In this interview, Zeena exposed Johnston's true identity as Christian evangelist on a mission. Johnston, not expecting to be exposed, scrambles to find a way to answer.

About "The First Family of Satansm" interview, Bob Larson Ministries, USA, 1990

Christian televangelist Larson’s 1989 interview with Zeena and Nikolas Schreck in Denver, Colorado was his first face-to-face encounter with genuine Satanists.

The film debuted in the presence of President George Herbert Walker Bush at the Religious Broadcasters Convention.

By the time the film was released on video in 1990 the Schrecks had already broken with LaVey and the Church of Satan. Nonetheless, having the ice broken by the Schrecks, the remaining Church of Satan representatives leaped at the opportunity to follow in their footsteps, pitching Larson for revolving guest spots on his radio show. Sadly none managed the Schrecks' decorum and diplomacy.

Disclaimer: Shortly after the taping, the Schrecks renounced the egocentric, social Darwinian LaVeyan party line expressed in The First Family of Satanism. Many uninformed viewers have wrongly assumed that this 1989 interview reflects the Schrecks' current philosophy, which it does not.

The following excerpt is from an interview with Nikolas Schreck for the Book Charles Manson: Le Gourou du rock.

Christophe Lorentz: It seems that you also appeared, along with Zeena, in a TV show called The First Family of Satan, hosted by Bob Larson. What can you tell me about that? When was it?

Nikolas Schreck: That was filmed in 1989 and released in 1990, the peak of the religious right-wing regime led by Reagan and Bush Sr., and the high point of the so-called ”Satanic Panic” that found Christian-controlled media and law enforcement whipping up mass hysteria directed against practitioners of all non-Christian religions in America. I think it would be hard for the French, who, in the 18th century, had already rejected the kind of fundamentalist Christian fanaticism that still holds such sway in the United States, to even imagine what the atmosphere was like in America for people like Zeena and myself during the time of that government sanctioned witch burning panic.

Before the neo-conservative factions of the US government invented the so-called War on Islamic Terror, it fought the War on Imaginary Satanic Crime, which was really just a part of the same paranoid crusade mentality. The USA hadn’t made it to the 18^th century yet, it was still in the Middle Ages. At the time, Zeena was one of very few practicing magicians who actually had the guts to go out in public and debate the religious right face to face, rather than passively accept the insane accusations of child sacrifice and Satanic crime they were selling to the public. Bob Larson was one of the leading televangelists back then, and his specialty was educating his flock about the dangers of Satanism. The only problem was he had never actually met a real live Satanist. He invited Zeena, who was then the highly visible High Priestess of the Church of Satan, to debate him in a special video that would be given to his parishioners in return for their ”love gifts” or donations to his ministry. She agreed to represent the Church of Satan on the program, if Larson would agree to show that there was more than just the CoS fighting as a unified front against the Christian dictatorship. She asked me if I’d be willing to appear with her as representative of the Werewolf Order, which, of course, she also led, but it would have been too complicated for her to represent two organizations at once. As a matter of fact, that was [nearly] Zeena’s last public appearance before she resigned from her family and the family business. We were the first magicians to actually go head to head with Bob Larson, and in a way, I think our appearance on that particular show had a lot to do with defanging the Satanic Panic, since the nonsense the right-wing Christians were spreading suddenly seemed very weak when they were forced to present their accusations to real live human beings who would talk back to them and disprove their lies and fantasies.

We agreed to appear on Larson’s program not only because it was necessary at that time to defend ourselves against the groundless charges of murder and ritual abuse we were bombarded with back then, but because we thought it was ironic and amusing that Bob Larson, who made a career out of fighting Devil Worship, was cynical enough to pay us, the alleged epitome of evil, a large sum of money to appear in his film. A deal with the Devil if ever there was one! We actually got to know Bob pretty well over the years, and I have to say of all the Christian crusaders we dealt with in those years, as a human being, off the camera and behind the scenes, he was a decent and intelligent person. To give you some idea of the deeply political nature of the religious right in the USA in 1990, I should mention that then-President George Bush (Sr.) was in the audience for The First Family of Satanism’s premiere at the National Association of Religious Broadcasters!

By the way, just to demystify anyone who thinks there’s anything glamorous about all this, every penny of our fee from that appearance, which was several thousand dollars, went towards paying the tuition for the expensive and elite private school to which Zeena sent her ungrateful juvenile delinquent son. However, despite all of Zeena’s never ending attempts and sacrifices to provide the best possible education for him, he was already well on his way to the violent psychotic break that would eventually lead to him frequently threatening his mother’s life, lying about her, and being reduced to robbing old men at gun point. So that was the disastrous and futile end result of the tainted money Bob Larson paid us in our Faustian bargain. The moral is: don’t take money from your ideological opponents and hand it over to unworthy lost causes.

Buddhism is a religion indigenous to the Indian subcontinent that encompasses a variety of traditions, beliefs and practices largely based on teachings attributed toSiddhartha Gautama, who is commonly known as the Buddha (meaning "the awakened one" in Sanskrit and Pāli). The Buddha lived and taught in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE.^[1] He is recognized by Buddhists as an awakened or enlightened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end suffering (dukkha) through eliminating ignorance (avidyā) by way of understanding and seeing dependent origination (pratītyasamutpāda) and eliminating craving (taṇhā), and thus attain the highest happiness, nirvāņa.^[2]

Two major branches of Buddhism are generally recognized: Theravada ("The School of the Elders") and Mahayana ("The Great Vehicle"). Theravada has a widespread following in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar etc.). Mahayana is found throughout East Asia (China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, Taiwan etc.) and includes the traditions of Pure Land, Zen, Nichiren Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Shingon, and Tiantai (Tendai). In some classifications, Vajrayana—practiced mainly in Tibet and Mongolia, and adjacent parts of China and Russia—is recognized as a third branch, while others classify it as a part of Mahayana.

While Buddhism remains most popular within Asia, both branches are now found throughout the world. Estimates of Buddhists worldwide vary significantly depending on the way Buddhist adherence is defined. Conservative estimates are between 350–750 million.^[3]^[4]^[5] Higher estimates are between 1.2 - 1.7 billion.^[6]^[7]^[8] It is also recognized as one of the fastest growing religions in the world.^[9]^[10]^[11]^[12]

Buddhist schools vary on the exact nature of the path to liberation, the importance and canonicity of various teachings and scriptures, and especially their respective practices.^[13] The foundations of Buddhist tradition and practice are the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma (the teachings), and the Sangha (the community). Taking "refuge in the triple gem" has traditionally been a declaration and commitment to being on the Buddhist path, and in general distinguishes a Buddhist from a non-Buddhist.^[14] Other practices may include following ethical precepts; support of the monastic community; renouncing conventional living and becoming a monastic; the development of mindfulness and practice of meditation; cultivation of higher wisdom and discernment; study of scriptures; devotionalpractices; ceremonies; and in the Mahayana tradition, invocation of buddhas and bodhisattvas.

The Liberation Through Hearing During The Intermediate State (Standard Tibetan: bardo "liminality"; thodol as "liberation"^[1]), sometimes translated asLiberation Through Hearing or transliterated as Bardo Thodol, is a funerary text. It is often referred to in the West by the more casual title, Tibetan Book of the Dead, a name which draws a parallel with the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, another funerary text.

The Tibetan text describes, and is intended to guide one through, the experiences that the consciousness has after death, during the interval between death and the next rebirth. This interval is known in Tibetan as the bardo. The text also includes chapters on the signs of death, and rituals to undertake when death is closing in, or has taken place. It is the most internationally famous and widespread work of Tibetan Nyingma literature.

Title

This text is commonly known by its Western title: The Tibetan Book of the Dead. However, Fremantle (2001: p. 20) states:

...there is in fact no single Tibetan title corresponding to the Tibetan Book of the Dead. The overall name given to the whole terma cycle is Profound Dharma of Self-Liberation through the Intention of the Peaceful and Wrathful Ones, and it is popularly known as Karma Lingpa's Peaceful and Wrathful Ones. It has been handed down through the centuries in several versions containing varying numbers of sections and subsections, arranged in different orders, ranging from around ten to thirty-eight titles. These individual texts cover a wide range of subjects, including the dzogchen view..., meditation instructions, visualizations of deities, liturgies and prayers, lists of mantras, descriptions of the signs of death, and indications of future rebirth, as well as those that are actually concerned with the after-death state. the [sic.] Tibetan Book of the Dead as we know it in English consists of two comparatively long texts on the bardo of dharmata (including the bardo of dying) and the bardo of existence.... They are called Great Liberation through Hearing: The Supplication of the Bardo of Dharmata and Great liberation through Hearing: The Supplication Pointing Out the Bardo of Existence. Within the texts themselves, the two combined are referred to as Liberation through Hearing in the Bardo, Great Liberation through Hearing, or just Liberation through Hearing,....

Background

According to Tibetan tradition, the Liberation Through Hearing During the Intermediate State was composed in the 8th century by Padmasambhava, written down by his primary student, Yeshe Tsogyal, buried in the Gampo hills in central Tibet and subsequently discovered by a Tibetan terton, Karma Lingpa in the 12th century.^[7] ^[8]There were variants of the book among different sects.^[9]

The Liberation Through Hearing During the Intermediate State is recited by Tibetan Buddhist lamas over a dying or recently deceased person, or sometimes over an effigy of the deceased. The name means literally "liberation through hearing in the intermediate state".

The Liberation Through Hearing During the Intermediate State differentiates the intermediate state between lives into three bardos:

The chikhai bardo or "bardo of the moment of death", which features the experience of the "clear light of reality", or at least the nearest approximation of which one is spiritually capable.
The chonyid bardo or "bardo of the experiencing of reality", which features the experience of visions of various Buddha forms (or, again, the nearest approximations of which one is capable).
The sidpa bardo or "bardo of rebirth", which features karmically impelled hallucinations which eventually result in rebirth. (Typically imagery of men and women passionately entwined.)

The Liberation Through Hearing During the Intermediate State also mentions three other bardos: those of "life" (or ordinary waking consciousness), of "dhyana" (meditation), and of "dream" (the dream state during normal sleep).

Together these "six bardos" form a classification of states of consciousness into six broad types. Any state of consciousness can form a type of "intermediate state", intermediate between other states of consciousness. Indeed, one can consider any momentary state of consciousness a bardo, since it lies between our past and future existences; it provides us with the opportunity to experience reality, which is always present but obscured by the projections and confusions that are due to our previous unskillful actions.

Comparison with the Western experience of death

One can perhaps attempt to compare the descriptions of the Liberation Through Hearing During the Intermediate State with accounts of Near-Death Experiences. These accounts sometimes mention a "white light", and helpful figures corresponding to that person's religious tradition. According to the Buddhist teachings, there are four different steps and the "white light" is most probably the last of them; thenMahaparinirvana eternal bliss. The divine beings are Buddhas and dakinis that people see as respective figures of their culture or religious belief.^{[citation needed]}

In an introduction to Evans-Wentz' version, Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung summarizes his psychological commentary:

The Bardo Thödol [Tibetan Book of the Dead] began by being a closed book, and so it has remained, no matter what kind of commentaries may be written upon it. For it is a book that will only open itself to spiritual understanding, and this is a capacity which no man is born with, but which he can only acquire through special training and special experience. It is good that such to all intents and purposes useless books exist. They are meant for those queer folk who no longer set much store by the uses, aims, and meaning of present-day civilisation.^[10]
