The role of the Doctor, passed from generation to generation.

Having been on for fifty years, Doctor Who has obviously found it necessary to replace its leading man from time to time. In a typically quirky twist, the character, a Time Lord, possesses the ability to regenerate his body upon death, leading to a new face, a slightly different personality and, of course, another actor. There have, as of this writing, been eleven people to play the Doctor, starting with William Hartnell in 1963 and ending with Matt Smith, who took over in 2010. Built into the shows mythology is a limit on regeneration though, 13 times, and with Smith set to leave this year, speculation as to who the 12th, and perhaps penultimate, Doctor will be. Hopefully not another white guy.
