It’s Monday, and no one wants to be at work. I’m feeling particularly feisty/combative and the Buzzcocks seem like the perfect band to fit this mood/bill. This is the last Buzzcocks live show before their break up (and before their reunion 8 years later). Boy do these guy play fast, tight and explosively. For a live performance, you can’t really ask for much more than that. Pete Shelley’s speaking voice isn’t what I thought it would be at all given his sort of whiney singing voice (not a dig, that’s what their known and appreciated for). Steve Garvey, for lack of a better term, makes his bass his bitch and John Maher treats his drums similarly.
The crowd is rowdy, so much so that an audience member stabbed the camera man before the fourth song, Fiction Romance, gets started hence the static middle of the audience shot for that song. I particlarly like when at the close of “Ever Fallen In Love” you can hear someone say exasperatedly “OH SHIT” because you know what? I can definitely see getting my ass handed to me at this show. Sadly Orgasm Addict and Why Can’t I Touch it are amiss from this set, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that this is one intense, fun and rip-roaring set. An essential listen/watch. -a
