OK, so first a little history: this story starts with Beat Club, the ground-breaking live music show that aired on German television from 1965 until 1972. (You can find three great shows dedicated to Beat Club in the archives.) Anyway, in 1972 Beat Club changed its name to Musikladen while keeping the same basic format and the carry-over host Uschi Nerke, (joined by Manfred Sexauer) running until 1984. In Musikladen as in Beat Club, you are treated to some top-shelf performances by some of the best acts of the day. But, what I personally like about watching Musikladen is not only the smoking performances (as an example, check the Blondie clip in the list) but also how there are numerous moments when I find myself unable to comprehend what I have just seen. When the ever more over-the-top video effects meet bare breasts and songs of suspect quality, the overall effect can bowl you over. I can also credit Musikladen with introducing me to several great acts like Lio, Hansje and Girlie, all of whom turned in some memorable performances on the show (even when lip-synching). Musikladen is also great for brushing up on obscure music trivia- for example, Mistral was actually a side project of Robbie van Leeuwen and Mariska Veres of Shocking Blue, both appearing in the video! Musikladen has really enhanced my cultural knowledge, appreciation and (mis)understanding, and it was not easy to pick these 12 clips. There was so much great footage I wanted to share, but had to narrow it down to a relatively compact list. For anyone unfamiliar with the show, I tried to represent all of my favorite aspects in one clip or another.
